Lucas wasn't much of a battler so he consulted a book on the bus ride over to the gym. There were some solid tips in it for a novice like him. It even had more advanced sections, which unfortunately went right over the scientist's head. It'd take a lot more than a bus ride's worth of studying to remember and comprehend everything the book had to offer.

Glancing around as he walked Lucas made his way towards the designated challenger spot. In hand he held a pokeball that glittered in the sunlight from its recent polishing.

"So do I get the first move?" He called out to the gym leader. "I think one of the online reviews said I could do that."

“Yeah, that’s correct. At least for my Gym that’s how it works. Challengers always get the first move,” he confirmed, reaching into his jacket and blowing a whistle.

The sudden rustling of wings (among other things) echoed throughout the aerial space, and a flock of Flying, as well as non-Flying types circled for a few moments around the area before settling down.[break][break]

Some perched on the wire fencing, while others decided to park themselves on the perches that were scattered here and there. The Salamence came over to join him on the other side of the field, and surprisingly so did his Aerodactyl.[break][break]

“Huh. Looks like my Terra wants to have a fight with you,” he said across the field as the Aerodactyl took to the skies first. The Salamence came to rest for a while, curling up into the biggest draconid ball to watch the match with a front-row view of the place.[break][break]

“Go on,” he encouraged, waiting for the League Scientist to throw out whoever was going to attack him first.

"Nice policy."

When it became clear aerodactyl was the first opponent Lucas shrinks the pokeball in hand. He slips it into his right pocket and exchanges it for a different pokeball. Specks of dust coat the new pokeball. Moving his fingers across the surface took streaks out off the dust coating.

"Alright alright, I'm releasing my pokemon." Lucas responds. "I was just switching balls."

Lucas clicks the pokeball twice. The first to enlarge it and the second to release its contents, a vikvavolt that flutters midair.

"Vikavolt get in close! Thunderbolt!" As vikavolt flies towards aerodactyl electricity gathers between its pincers. A split moment later a roaring thunderbolt flies towards aerodactyl.

Seeing the flash of electricity, the Aerodactyl let out a screech before Alexei swung into action.[break][break]

“Defensive screen, Rock Slide!” he called out, knowing that the electricity was bad news in general. Swerving in mid-air, the Fossil Pokémon let out another screeching noise, before summoning a large cavalcade of boulders in an attempt to block the flash of electricity.[break][break]

That attack was dangerous in more ways than one. Hopefully it doesn’t hit, hopefully it doesn’t hit! I’m not going to take that attack just out of the gate! He thought a few moments later as he kept his eyes on the strange Pokémon that was flying on the opposite side of the field.[break][break]

The thunder bolt shot zigzagging through the air towards the aerodactyl. Using its prehistoric power it begins to form several rocks midair as a makeshift conductor. But before they can grow to full size the beam from vikavolt pierces aerodactyl's body. The rocks only manage to catch the tail end of the thunderbolt, absorbing but a fraction of its damage. Then as fast as they appeared the rocks hit turn to dust, their purpose served.

"Electro web! Go for the wings!" Lucas calls out to his vikavolt as it closes in on aerodactyl. From its mouth the stag beetle pokemon spews a wide casting web towards Aerodactyl's left side.

“Terra, move!” he called out, making the Aerodactyl fly backwards. While it wasn’t an outright attack per se, the tips of the Electro Web attack managed to ensnare his Fossil Pokémon, before it let out a screech of dismay.[break][break]

The wings were slowly being coated in the sticky goo—and it was at this point he thought he recognized the attack, having heard of this from his fellow gym leader, Selena.[break][break]

So that’s what it does… he thought to himself, before the Aerodactyl repositioned himself closer to where he stood. “Okay, it’s a little pesky I’ll admit that,” he said more to himself than at large before continuing, “…but we’ll eventually find a way to get close enough.”[break][break]

Thinking, thinking… for a few moments he was silent.[break][break]

How was he to close the distance, then? He pondered on this for a few moments before making his move.[break][break]

“Gotta suck it up, Terra, let’s go—Rock Slide, now! Spread it out as far as you can manage!” he called out, before the Aerodactyl let out another screeching call and flying forward before releasing a cavalcade of raining rocks coming at the Vikavolt in a spread-out fan-shaped formation.[break][break]

How was he going to trap the danged thing, it was possible the Vikavolt knew Agility so he would have to think of a way around that…[break][break]

Aerodactyl was hit by Electro Web! Backed away before coming forward and using Rock Slide in an attempt to catch the Vikavolt!

Lucas is quick to take advantage of the aerodactyl's slow retreat and Alexei's hesitance in shot calling.

"Get back!" The head scientist roars, his voice carrying across the battlefield. Vikavolt immediately begins its retreat, but it's speed is too slow. Still within the aerodactyl's range Lucas watches as its prehistoric energy crystallizes above vikavolt.

"Agility! Agility!"

Sparks fly off vikavolt's body as it surges forward and exits the rock slide's domain.

The Rock Slide was repelled—however, there was something this Vikavolt didn’t know about the Aerodactyl across it. The prehistoric Fossil Pokémon had just the right counter for it, and now it was going to come into use.[break][break]

Well then, guess what’s going to come barreling your way… he thought as he whistled a sharp note exactly once before pointing at the nimble target.[break][break]

“Scary Face, now!” he called out. Hopefully the tactic would work, because honestly—chasing down an opponent through the air may look fun, but it was not fun for the chaser![break][break]

The Aerodactyl let out a screech before dropping his face into the most hideous moue he could manage while aiming at the Vikavolt; hopefully terrifying the other to slow down or maybe stop in its tracks? Who knows if it was going to work?[break][break]

Facing the opposite direction of aerodactyl as it flies away Vikavolt manages to evade the affect of scary face. Lucas begins to think that despite Alexei's seniority he wasn't the best gym leader around. He wasn't an expert battler but even he knew that scary face wouldn't have any effect when the pokemon is looking the other way.

"Vikavolt thunderbolt!"

Vikavolt veers left and unleashes a thunderbolt from between its pincers.

Crap, there was his first mistake—see, there was a reason why Alexei preferred non-traditional challenges most of the time. It offered him (and whoever else was challenging him at the time) to spread their wings and trust their partner, quite literally.[break][break]

The first mistake was that he’d misjudged the direction where the Vikavolt was looking, and now there was a Thunderbolt coming in from somewhere about ready to strike the Aerodactyl. Letting out a cry of surprise, the attack found purchase on the Fossil Pokémon, but he was not going to go down without a fight![break][break]

No, no, definitely not![break][break]

Time to make the most of it. And time to reconfigure what Terra knows in case someone else brings a pesky Pokémon like this into the area again… he thought as he called out, “Charge on, Iron Head!”[break][break]

With a guttural screech, the Aerodactyl surged forward, lowering its head and coming in as quickly as it could—while not as fast as it was earlier due to the Thunderbolt, he was not going to let this go down without a say in the matter.[break][break]

Aerodactyl took the Thunderbolt attack, it’s super effective! Aerodactyl still has some fight left in him, and uses Iron Head!

As the aerodactyl flew to its likely defeat Lucas has to give it to the gym leader. They didn't go down without a fight.

"Turn around, now stop! Steady, steady!" Lucas calls out to the vikavolt as aerodactyl approaches at top speed. He watches the prehistoric pokemon intently as he attempts to time his counterattack correctly. The aerodactyl is on the edge of death's door and Lucas is intent on finishing it.

"Thunderbolt now!" Lucas roars out the command. Vikavolt releases the thunderbolt right before the aerodactyl collides with its massive hitbox. The collision sends vikavolt hurtling through the air uncontrollably.

Sometimes, having Rock for a dual-type was good. Other times, it was bad and messy to all shit.[break][break]

Today just happened to be one of the times when having both Rock and Flying on a single Pokémon was a bad idea. Especially if the other Pokémon across the field knew a super-effective move that hit pretty hard earlier in the encounter![break][break]

He knew that Terra was just the way to soften up the pesky Pokémon in front of him, and the second Thunderbolt hit it head-on. The prehistoric Pokémon let out a pained screech, before falling backwards due to the impact of the Electric-type attack.[break][break]

A beam of red light shot out to save the Aerodactyl before he crashed to the ground, and Alexei looked behind him to see that Gabriel had already stood up from his balled-up position behind him.[break][break]

“Gabe, you know what to do. Hit that bug with a Flamethrower attack once you’re in the air,” and with that the Salamence gave a roar, taking off with a powerful gust of wind and taking the position of his fallen companion.[break][break]

Intimidate kicked in as the Salamence let out an almighty roar before taking a deep breath and exhaling a powerful, yet controlled stream of flames toward the Vikavolt.[break][break]

At least Gabriel can keep his distance… he thought darkly for a few moments as he kept his gaze on the Salamence in the air.[break][break]
